CHAPTER 14

Tori

Iwas excited for, and dreading, the daka. Excited because I did like parties—wasn’t going to even begin to deny that—and dreading because I would be getting a lot of attention as Ruzak’s special guest.

I was already getting a lot more smiles and shy looks from the other women than I had previously. It wasn’t like anyone had been tripping me in the hallway before. Most of them, with the exception of Allegra, seemed like genuinely nice people. But I did wonder if this would affect my planned return to Earth.

Before I’d gotten my feelings mixed up with the warlord of the Thrail, my plan was clean and predictable. Now, everything was a jumbled mess. The only thing I knew for sure was that I would be going back to testify against Antonio. But would I stay on Earth or would I come back here? Those were questions I didn’t have answers to, yet.

I slipped into the rose gold dress that skimmed my curves and highlighted my waist, adorned with delicate gold crystals that shimmered in even the lowest of light. I felt like a princess in this dress, with soft, matching shoes that were comfortable and pretty. I took Seluz’s suggestion from when he’d dropped off the dress earlier, and borrowed a bit of his gold dust for my cheeks and eyelids, and pulled my hair up. I secured it with some crystal hairpins I had picked up from a vendor earlier in the day. I twirled, admiring myself in the mirror before joining the women down on the main floor to wait for the hoverlacs to pick us up.

I knew the moment I stepped foot on the white shining floor that even this part would not be simple and ordinary.

Jina, Ruzak’s first guard, stood at the doorway in metal and leather armor. Her eyes locked on mine the instant she saw me. “You,” she said with a flick of her hand. “You are to come with me.”

I sighed and crossed the crowded room. “Hi, Jina,” I said, trying to greet her in the rudimentary Mitran I’d been learning from the instructional screen Ruzak had sent me.

You would never know there was a party, based on Jina’s attire. She wore her full armor and carried her spear like always. Her mouth curved into a smile for me. “Hello, Tori,” she said quietly, which I appreciated, because I had not told anyone else my real name. “I am escort you personal to the daka.”

I shook my head. “This can’t be simple, can it?”

She didn’t know what I said, as my Mitran skills were even worse than her human ones. “The warlord favors you,” was all she said. “Come.”

I followed her out with everyone watching and we rode in our own smaller carriage, pulled by a gratik, to the daka.

It was still light enough for the flowers in the meadow to be bathed in the nearby gas giant’s warm red glow. Jina said little on the way, probably for the best, since trying to get words out in each other’s language would give both of us a headache.
